Dr Manmohan Singh may be the second choice for the Congress for the Prime Minister’s post, but industry honchos are of the opinion that Dr Singh — a combination of a politician and an administrator (RBI chief from 1982-85) — is the best choice. The industry is assured that the reforms process initiated by him in the early ’nineties would continue with an accelerated pace.
Industry leaders across the board welcomed the Congress decision. Godrej Group chairman Adi Godrej thought that it was a very good development. “Singh’s strong leadership and the quality of his heart and head will be very good for the country. I think the reforms process will continue,” said Godrej.
Larsen & Toubro chairman and managing director AM Naik said: “Under the given circumstances, it is the best that could be done. He is the most acceptable candidate to take forward economic policies. He is the original reformist. He has seen India through the difficult times. Industry hopes that he holds the finance portfolio for a year.”
Tata Steel vice president finance RC Nandrajog said that the reform process would accelerate under Singh’s leadership. Nandrajog added: “I feel happy with Dr Singh becoming the prime minister, the reforms process in the country will accelerate. After all, he is the father of the reforms process in India.”
Jindal Iron and Steel Company Ltd joint managing director and CEO Raman Madhok added: “I think that this will be a very good decision as he is a very good and intelligent man.”
Ispat Industries Ltd director finance & secretary Anil Sureka said that it will be for the betterment of the country if Singh is elected as the prime minister as he is ideal for the post.
Shoppers’ Stop managing director and chief executive officer BS Nagesh added: “It’s a positive development. Typically, nobody can reverse the economic reforms that are being undertaken and least Dr Singh, who had initiated them, as long as he has the support from the allies. He is both a politician and has been an administrator in the past heading the RBI and hence possesses both the qualities as the head of the nation.
Kinetic chairman Arun Firodia said under Singh’s prime ministership, the country would be run on sound economic policies which were the need of the hour.
