MALCOLM GLAZER (28.1%)
Owner of American football team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, among the 250 richest men in the US according to Forbes magazine. Attracted by debt-free United’s financial potential and their brand image, wants the largely untapped United States market for the club. Has had two previous offers rebuffed.
JOHN MAGNIER & J. P. MCMANUS (28.9%)
Magnier is a powerful figure in the world bloodstock business via his Coolmore Stud, McManus is a high-rolling gambler and former bookmaker; Man Utd’s biggest investors through Cubic Expression Ltd; held inconclusive talks with Glazer last November and abstained in voting at United’s annual general meeting when Glazer ousted three directors.
MAN UNITED PLC’S BOARD
Depleted after Glazer voted against the re-appointment of Maurice Watkins, Philip Yea and commercial director Andy Anson; David Gill appointed Chief Executive in 2003 and Roy Gardner has been chairman since 2002 and a director since 2000; supported now only by finance director Nick Humby and independent non-executive Ian Much.
UNITED FANS
Their hostility to the bid by Rupert Murdoch’s BSkyB played a large part in the British government’s decision to turn it down; believe Glazer’s takeover would saddle the company with a huge debt and fear he would sell Old Trafford.
