September 22: "Candle-making is our passion. It is so satisfying… in just four hours you get to see your finished work," says Dimple, a keen artist herself. "The girls have been able to find their own artistic talents through candle-making. I love candles and when I am abroad always buy them, so I thought why not just make them myself," Dimple says.
The flicker of interest in candle-making first manifest itself about a year ago, when an unwell and off-work Twinkle tried her hand at it. Now, it has become a family affair. Designer candles, some scented, some arometherapeutic, others have chunks of fruit in them and there is also a special, stained glass line. “It is so addictive. Often Twinkle phones me on the way home from a shoot and asks me to start melting the wax,” Dimple says.
Their products are available at several stores in the city including The Bombay Store, Good Earth and Allure. “They have been selling very well. So we decided to promote them,” says Pawan Uttam, owner of Allure, locatedat Crawford Market.
Dimple gives most of the credit to her daughters, “who went around the stores themselves selling their products”. But they decided not to market their products under their names as they did not want people to buy them merely because they are made by a famous person. So Rinke came up with the name `Faraway Tree’, the name of an adventure book she had enjoyed reading as a child. All the candles are homemade, and the Khanna girls do the wrapping themselves. And just because they are made by famous hands these candles are still well-priced. The smaller candles cost just Rs 150.
