South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon continues to enjoy a slight advantage over India’s Shashi Tharoor in the race for the United Nations’ secretary-general post.

In the second straw poll among Security Council members on Thursday, Tharoor, who is UN undersecretary general, maintained the second position he had achieved in the earlier straw poll in July, but received three negative votes even as two members expressed no opinion.

Diplomatic sources said at least one of the negative votes was cast by a Permanent Member, which will be a worry for the Indian. In all Tharoor received ten positive votes.

For Tharoor to become the secretary general, India needs to ensure that none of the five permanent members casts a negative vote against him.

Ban received 14 positive votes in the straw poll, against 11 he got in July. He also received one negative vote this time, though it is not clear which nation cast that.
