The Karnataka unit of Shiv Sena, which has been toeing the Kannadiga line on the border row, is in a fix now, with party chief Bal Thackeray breathing fire on the dissolution of the Belgaum City Corporation. Thackery, in a signed article in Sena mouthpiece Saamna, has said that the dissolution was an insult to the ‘‘asmita’’ (pride) of Maharashtra.

Thackeray, in a front page editorial on Wednesday, said that if he got power (in Maharashtra), he will merge Belgaum and Nippani with Maharashtra.

Uddhav Thackeray, the Sena chief’s son and party’s working president, is also fuming over the dissolution of the corporation but blamed the Congress for the festering border dispute. Delay by the Congress in solving the dispute has led to the present mess, he has said.

Pramod Mutalik, Shiva Sena’s Karnataka chief, had recently said that his party had dropped the border row from its agenda and announced that the Sena would press for implementation of the Mahajan Commission report to solve the dispute.

Mutalik, in an interview, had said that Bal Thackeray was expected in Hubli in December to apologise to Kannadigas for the past activities of the Sena. He had also said that Bal Thackery would announce that the border issue should be solved according to the Mahajan Commission report.

However, Bal Thackery’s latest statement has created confusion among Sena members who had joined Mutalik recently. Mutalik had also criticised the behaviour of some Sena corporators of Belgaum who had supported the MES agitation. The corporators, however, had given Mutalik the short shrift and participated in the agitation.

Mutalik is now facing a testing time as the Shiva Sena has taken a pro- Maharashtra stand by announcing that it will respect the feelings of Marathi-speaking people of Belgaum who wanted to join Maharashtra.
