Tempers ran high at the India-Bangladesh border at Petrapole near Bongaon, about 80 km from Kolkata, on Wednesday after a Bangladeshi national was shot dead by the BSF while trying to cross over.

The incident, which led to exchange of fire between the Bangladesh Rifles and the BSF, forced the two sides to hold a flag meeting to ease tension.

Sources said that there has been a sharp rise in the number of casualties of Bangladeshi intruders due to BSF firing along the border in south Bengal districts covering Nadia, Murshidabad and Malda and North and South 24 Parganas.
