DHAKA, OCTOBER 28: Sachin Tendulkar loves the Aussies. “They are warm people,” he feels. The Australians too love him. But what about their cricketers ? They must be tired of the sight of this five feet, four inches batsman. “Batting is like a stroll in a park to him. Just go out and do it,” Mark Waugh said.

Tendulkar’s last two innings against the Aussies were hundreds and he made it three-in-a-row this evening. But the champion can not only bat. He can kill with his spin also as Australian captain Steve Waugh realised in a highly charged atmosphere today.Australia were 194 for four in the 35th over, chasing India’s 307 for eight. In came Tendulkar with his gentle tweakers. The Aussie skipper gave a tame return catch. Four overs later, Michael Bevan was bowled by an off-break as the batsman played for a leg-break.

Tendulkar’s heroics over, it was time for India to wrap up the match by 44 runs and seal a place in the October 31 semi-final of the Wills ICC Mini-World Cup against the winners oftomorrow’s game between Pakistan and West Indies.

Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh were firing on all cylinders from the word go, before Gilchrist perished to Srinath’s fire. Undeterred, the Aussies carried on, with Ricky Ponting providing an ideal foil to Mark Waugh. Ponting went after the left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi in an attempt to unsettle him while Waugh picked up runs without any risks.

Australia were cruising along before Joshi had his pound of flesh. He first accounted for a charging Ponting and then pushed one quicker to dismiss Mark Waugh.

The wickets brought relief to the tense Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin, who had a disastrous start to his record 300th appearance in One-day games with a `duck’ in the afternoon.

Steve Waugh and Michael Bevan had the Indians on tenterhooks for a while before Tendulkar’s magic did them in. India started disastrously, as Saurav Ganguly glanced Kasprowicz only to find ‘keeper Adam Gilchrist come from nowhere to take a one-handed blinder. Azhar walked in,amid hopes of his getting past Desmond Haynes’ world record of maximum runs in One-day internationals, but lasted only three balls.

Tendulkar scored his 19th century and has already scored more than 1650 runs in 28 innings with eight hundreds this year. Before he was run out, two runs short of a well deserved half century, Rahul Dravid had proved his utility, adding 142 runs for the third-wicket with Tendulkar who then coaxed the next man, Ajay Jadeja, into adding another 132 runs for the fourth wicket.

Had it not been for a spate of wickets going down in the last few overs, India looked on course for getting past their highest ever total in One-dayers — 316 against Pakistan at the same venue in January.

Tendulkar was a run short of his highest individual score of 142 against the same opponents when he got himself run out.

INDIA FINED: The Indians were fined 15 per cent of their match fee for bowling three overs short in the Australian innings.
