Uttar Pradesh BJP president Vinay Katiyar today asked Muslims to allow Hindus to build a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya, saying if they do so, the majority community would forgo its claim on other disputed sites in the country.
‘‘I call upon the Muslims to take a lead in construction of the Ram temple and I promise on behalf of the Hindu Samaj that Hindus will forgo claims on other disputed sites,’’ he said.
Muslims should come forward and ‘‘close the chapter of hatred and distrust’’, Katiyar urged, adding the Hindus were ‘‘ready to give credit to Muslims for this gesture of generosity’’.
He claimed the on-going excavation had revealed presence of a temple under the base of the mosque. A portion of a pillar with lotus embedded in it, a statue of Lord Ganesha, a stone with footsteps, a statue of a goddess, rakh (ashes) used for cooking and four-layered flooring all indicate the presence of a temple beneath the mould of soil, Katiyar felt.
Katiyar’s conciliatory tone notwithstanding, the VHP is again raising rhetoric on the issue. The Parishad has called for a two-day meeting at Ayodhya starting April 29, where a number of saints and VHP functionaries will decide the future course to be taken on the issue.
‘‘The VHP has now decided not to consult anybody and continue its agitation, in which the meeting will play an important role,’’ said Sharad Sharma, the VHP’s media in-charge at Ayodhya.
