With Defence Minister George Fernandes all set to relinquish his post, the Tehelka issue resurfaced today with Army Headquarters issuing an official communique that the general court martial for the three accused officers was likely to be held soon.
The three officers, Maj Gen P.S.K. Choudhary (retd), Brig Iqbal Singh (retd) and Col A. Sehgal are likely to face a court martial as the disciplinary proceedings are at an advanced stage. The Tehelka scandal, where officers and politicians were on camera, allegedly accepting cash as bribes had forced the former defence minister to resign from the government.
After being reinstated, Fernandes continued to be boycotted by the Opposition on the grounds that he would not be recognised as the defence minister till the official commission set up to investigate into the issue did not complete its work.
However, while the Commission continued with its inquiry, Tehelka continued to be an issue which was not discussed within South Block to avoid any embarrassment to the defence minister.
According to the official communique, the court martial for Maj Gen Choudhury and Col Sehgal is likely to be commence on May 24. However Brig Singh has filed a case in the Delhi High Court against the disciplinary action initiated by the Army. The next hearing, the communique said, is on July 26.
