JAMSHEDPUR, MARCH 12: Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly attributed the victory over South Africa on Sunday to fine effort by his team, while his South African counterpart expressed optimism of his squad bouncing back in the five-match series.
“I was particularly happy with the performance of the bowlers, specially Sunil Joshi and Ajit Agarkar. They bowled well to contain the rivals’ run rate and make them all out within two hundred,” Ganguly said.
“It is a nice feeling to be on the winning side. We want to keep this winning streak in our next matches as well,” he noted.
About his own century, the southpaw said, “it was very satisfying to make a hundred in this slow-turning wicket where the ball was coming slow.”
Asked why he took so much of time in getting his ton after reaching the nineties, Ganguly said, “I was not in a hurry. I did not want to take any chances. It was important to stay on the wicket which was taking turn.”
The new captain was also very happy to be able to break the jinx at Keenan forcing the first victory for India on this ground. Earlier, on all four occasions here, India had lost the matches.
The South African skipper Cronje said the loss of his wicket was the turning point in the South African innings. “We were going nicely and then I got out. It’s the sort of wicket where you lose one wicket and everything goes wrong,” Cronje said after the match. “They (India) played sensibly … mixed discretion with defence,” he said, warning the tourists would bounce back in the remaining three matches.
