CHANDIGARH, MARCH 25: Activists of the Punjab Nav Niyukt Adhyapak Union have decided to intensify their agitation by holding rallies to press for their demands.

According to the unions press secretaries, Varinder Patel and Kulwinder Josan, on March 29, 525 union members will keep a 24-hour fast. They further said that if the government takes no steps to resolve the case before April 7, a "chetna march" would be organised by them to Anandpur Sahib.

The teachers are on a fast unto death outside the office of the Director Public Instructions (S), Sector 17, to protest the dismissal of the teachers by the state government on November 13, 1997. Tejinder Kaur, the first teacher to start the hunger strike is under treatment at the PGI, while Ritu Joshi and Jaspal Singh are under treatment at the General Hospital, Sector 16. One of the sacked teachers, Gurcharan Singh, is now observing the fast at the site.
