Following reports of the instance in which an eight-year-old student was suspended by her ankles as punishment at a school in Tekpole village, the Zila Parishad has suspended school teacher M.B. Raut and ordered an inquiry into the incident.

ZP chief executive officer Rajendra Chavan told Express that the teacher had been suspended with immediate effect. ‘‘An inquiry officer has gone to the village, and his report is to come in. The punishment was very harsh,’’ he said.

To assure parents, Chavan has asked them to continue sending their children to ZP schools, despite the incident. ‘‘We are taking all necessary precautions. I am also thinking of formulating a set of measures to prevent a recurrence,’’ he added.

In the incident, which reportedly took place last Saturday, Class II student Ananta Bamgude was suspended from the ceiling for over 30 minutes, after being tied hand and foot. She was also reportedly beaten by Raut. Ananta was punished for not completing homework.

Villagers complained to several high-ranking ZP officials, including Education Officer (Primary) Prakash Parab. Deputy Education Officer E.S. More said the inquiry officer would take statements of all involved, but the teacher was missing.
