A day after a person on a hunger strike in Thane died, district officials yesterday sought to distance themselves from the incident as well as the contradictory statements issued by them a day earlier.

Authorities claimed that 35-year-old Anna Hulgunde had died of tuberculosis of the lungs and not because of his hunger strike. A diagnosis done in January 2004 indicated he was suffering from tuberculosis, Assistant Commissioner of Police Nandkumar Chowgule said. ‘‘It is even doubtful whether Hulgunde had participated in the hunger strike,’’ he added.

On Monday, Chougule had stated Hulgunde was under medical supervision during the fast. ‘‘Three check-ups were conducted on Hulgunde,’’ he said.

Hulgunde’s family had been on a hunger strike outside the Thane collector’s office since May. They were demanding payment of dues owed to them and 190 labourers of the Vadar Samaj, a nomadic tribe, by Mulund-based contractor Mahendra Lalan of Ankit Constructions.

Thane Collector, I.S. Chahal, submitted a report to the state government, claiming Hulgunde’s name did not figure in the list of people on the hunger strike, sources said. The report was submitted to the police and the collector’s office, the sources added.

During a hunger strike, it is customary for a government medical team to regularly conduct checks on those participating in the agitation. In this case, Anna’s name did not figure in the list of citizens agitating in protest on the issue, the report says. On Monday, Chahal had admitted that he knew about family sitting on protest.
