Total tax collections grew by 17.4 per cent to Rs 50,232.21 crore during the first four months of this fiscal mainly on account of impressive corporation tax and excise duty mop up.

While direct tax collection was up by 22.62 per cent to Rs 12,517 crore during April-July, indirect tax mop up grew by 15.77 per cent to Rs 37,715.21 crore, finance ministry officials told PTI here on Wednesday. Government collected Rs 2,309 crore more in direct taxes during the first four months compared to Rs 10,208 crore during April-July 2001 mainly due to a robust 69.6 per cent growth in corporation tax mop up. Corporation tax mop up stood at Rs 4,018 crore during the first four months mainly due to higher profits booked by companies following an upturn in industry. Income tax mop up was up by only 8.9 per cent to Rs 8,407 crore during April-July. Collections on other heads of direct tax like wealth tax increased by 20.6 per cent to Rs 92 crore.
