.

Telecom regulator Trai has asked Tata Teleservices and Reliance Infocomm to withdraw their advertisements for fixed wireless services, saying they were misleading. The two firms’ advertisements for fixed wireless phones referred to their products as ‘‘walky’’ and ‘‘unlimited cordless’’, respectively.

Trai said the words ‘‘walky’’ and ‘‘unlimited’’ made them sound similar to mobile services. The two firms must report compliance by January 13, after removing all banners, brochures and other advertising material from public view.

Besides, the two firms must specify how their fixed wireless services are different from cellular mobility, on their websites. The interconnect and access deficit regime treats calls from mobile and fixed services differently, which according to Trai, must be communicated to users.

‘‘Tata Teleservices has advertised their fixed wireless service as walky …, Trai is of the view that the said advertisement with the said slogan is misleading as consumers are led to believe that mobile services are offered when actually fixed wireless services are offered,’’ Trai said.
