Arrested early on Friday morning from her Versova residence, a burqa-clad Tarannum, the former bar girl with alleged underworld links, was denied bail and remanded in police custody for 10 days.

Tarannum was detained at the Crime Branch office till noon, taken for a medical examination and then presented in court along with bookies Milind Dhiraj Nandu alias DJ and Pradeep Kunwarji Parmar, sparking a media frenzy.

‘‘No offence of cheating can be made out from the facts of the case. Section 66 of the Information Technology Act is absolutely unwarranted. This is an illegal arrest,’’ said defence counsel for the bookies, Satish Maneshinde.

‘‘The Crime Branch, without any material proof, has invoked Section 420 on my client,’’ said Prakash Shetty, defence counsel for Tarannum. Shetty said that there was no need for custodial interrogation as the police had already questioned and recorded Tarannum’s statements in the last 15 days.
