Third seed Tara Iyer was certainly the favourite going into the $10,000 ITF final against qualifier Chae Kyung-yae of Korea at the DLTA Complex today. And a few minutes into the match it looked it would be over quickly.
However, this clash turned out to be a good contest, and even though it was the Indian who was smiling after a 7-5, 6-2 victory, the match had many points to remember.
Tara pounded off winners from the baseline, earning a break in the first game, and looking even stronger on her serve as she quickly went 2-0 up.
Tara’s first serve was much improved and she dominated early in the first set, but Chae got her act together and the left-handed 26-year-old got the set back on serve with a break in the sixth game. Five games later the Indian got a crucial break at 6-5. It was an ace down the middle, set sealed at 7-5.
Tara started well in the second set too and was soon 4-0 up. Chae managed to get a break back in the sixth game, making the score 2-4, but that was all. A forehand crosscourt on match point brought up her fourth title of the year.
“I was really tired coming into the match, and I just wanted to compete. I was aggressive today, and that’s the way I like to play,” said Tara after the match.
