NEW DELHI, Aug 25: The status report on Delhi police’s probe into the mysterious disappearance of Dr S Tanwar and subsequent discovery of dismembered parts of his body five years ago, shows on a plain reading that the police either delayed or ignored vital aspects.
The doctor examining the right leg of Dr Tanwar, found in a canvas bag on November 8, 1993, in Laxmibai Nagar, South Delhi, opined two days later that it was preserved in ice. Other parts of Dr Tanwar’s body, except for the torso, were found in the same locality on October 29.
However, the police, almost one and half-year after the doctor’s opinion, in its affidavit stated that on April 4, 1995 “ice-sellers in the area of Lodhi Colony police station and Kotla Mubarakpur were interrogated to find out the sale of large quantity of ice, allegedly used for preservation of the leg”.
The probe was transferred from Delhi police to the crime branch on January 31, 1994, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted on April 2, 1997, yet not a single person has been arrested in connection with the probe.
However, police claims in its report submitted before the Delhi High Court that it has questioned over 50 persons, including Congress president Sitaram Kesri, in connection with the murder of Dr Tanwar.
Almost all those interrogated had told police that Dr Tanwar was very friendly with many ladies and a pharmacist, working in the CGHS dispensary where he was working, gave description of a lady who frequently visited the doctor at the dispensary. The police is silent on its effort to trace this lady though it said the portrait of the lady had been prepared with the help of the description given by the pharmacist.
