NEW DELHI, Nov 23: Tamil Nadu’s high school student N Anbu clinched a gold and two bronze medals as India claimed a rich haul of seven medals at the men’s World Powerlifting Championships which concluded at Terento, Italy, on Sunday.

Riding on Anbu’s superb effort, India finished with one gold, two silvers and four bronze medals in the championship in which all together 217 lifters from 48 countries took part, according to an Indian Powerlifting Federation release on Monday.

In the 52 kg class, Anbu lifted 242.5 kg in deadlift to win the gold. He also won a bronze in squad event and finished overall third with a total of 565 kg, bettering his National mark by 12.5 kg. Railways’ Prakash Garje won a silver medal clearing 232.5 kg in deadlift. The Indian drew a big applause as he cleared nine of nine lifts but could only finish fourth overall.

V Loganathan was unlucky as he missed the deadlift gold in 56 kg class on body weight to Hsieh Tsung Ting. He again missed a silver on body weight (200g only) toBrandtzaeg of Norway. Both of them lifted 230 kg in squat.The Indian finished third overall with a total of 585 kg to win his second bronze.
