Chairman of the UP Sunni Central Board of Waqfs, Hafiz Mohammad Usman, today reserved his verdict on the controversy over whether the Taj Mahal is a waqf property. Usman said he would announce his verdict on June 25.

The hearing was held in compliance with the directives of the Allahabad High Court, issued on November 8, 2004.

There was high drama at the hearing today with counsels for petitioner Irfan Bedaar, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and legal advisor to the Waqf Board, trading charges.

There was more confusion when Syed Mustafa Husain, counsel for Khurshid Agha, moved an application stating that since Mumtaz Mahal, according to news reports, was a Shia, Taj Mahal is a Shia waqf property and hence his plea should also be heard. The chairman rejected the application.
