SYDNEY, December 4: Veteran offspinner Pat Symcox flattened Australia with a virtuoso batting and bowling display to lead South Africa to a comprehensive one-day cricket victory at the Sydney Cricket Ground here today.

The feisty 37-year-old Symcox held South Africa together with a valuable 40-run last-wicket stand with fast bowler Allan Donald, contributing an unbeaten 27 off 32 balls as his side reached 200 off their 50 overs.

He then delivered career-best figures of 4-28 with his off-spin to dump Steve Waugh’s revamped team out for a miserable 133 off just 38 overs.

Australia began promisingly enough with opener Mark Waugh scoring 45 as the home side got well out of the blocks at 61 for one — but to the dismay of the 36,572 SCG crowd, the last nine wickets tumbled for just 72 runs.

It was sweet revenge for Symcox after he complained bitterly to the umpires about crowd misbehavior. Spectators on the notorious SCG hill were pelting him with oranges, tennis balls and even a flip flop as he fielded.

Wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist (4), a controversial selection ahead of Test gloveman Ian Healy, then made a soft return off Daryll Cullinan to give the part-time offspinner his second wicket in 82 games.

Opener Gary Kirsten struggled to lay bat on ball for the first few overs.

However, he soon peeled off and along with Cullinan put on 59 in 14 overs for the third wicket.
