Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala today said the Sutlej Yamuna Link canal would be completed by the year-end, an issue which, SAD chief Parkash Singh Badal said, was more important to his party than the upcoming SGPC polls.
The SYL canal would be completed in Punjab by the end of the year as per the directive of the apex court, Chautala told a gathering in Rewari.
In Amritsar, Badal told reporters that the SYL issue was more important to his party than the coming SGPC polls as the future of thousands of farmers was at stake. ‘‘My party will never hesitate to come forward to save the interest of the peasant community,’’ the former CM said.
The former Punjab chief minister said his party had decided to launch a ‘‘non-violent’’ struggle to prevent the flow of river water into Haryana.
Badal said a final decision on the course of action to be adopted would be taken at the party’s political affairs committee meeting.
