England openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook walked out to face nine overs left in the day, but play was called off due to bad light.

Swann, playing only his second test, triggered the slump by dismissing both set batsmen. He took three wickets for 10 runs in the afternoon, returning three for 122. All-rounder Andrew Flintoff took three for 54.

Swann had Gambhir and Dravid caught and trapped Sachin Tendulkar (11) in front before Flintoff removed Vangipurappu Laxman for nought, going on to add two tailenders to his tally.

Dravid struck 19 fours in his 328-ball effort while left-hander Gambhir, who reached his fourth test hundred overnight, hit 25 fours and a six.
