Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi plans to start an Opposition newspaper in the military-run country.

The 56-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner said in an interview in The Nation daily she would apply for permission to publish a newspaper. ‘‘We will apply for the rights. We have a plan. We’ll see whether this will be allowed,’’ she said. The government keeps strict controls on the country’s media which are viewed as mouthpieces of the ruling junta.

Suu Kyi said her release from house arrest had been unconditional, but restrictions still remained. ‘‘My release has been unconditional… The regime has not said that all restrictions on the rights of NLD have been taken away,’’ she said. Suu Kyi said she was free to travel wherever she wanted and there were no curbs on her political activities.
