The Maharashtra government has finally taken action against Governor Mohammed Fazal’s ADC Deepak Pandey, accused of torturing his wife. On Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil recommended to the Centre that Pandey be suspended.
‘‘On the basis of preliminary reports, we have ordered a high-level departmental probe against Pandey,’’ Patil, who also holds the Home portfolio, said. Patil said it was necessary to get the Centre’s permission before suspending Pandey because the ADC was an All India Service official.
However, a few senior IAS and IPS officials said as per amended rules, this wasn’t necessary. Nidhi first lodged a complaint against Pandey on April 4. A probe by Inspector General Uddhav Kamble confirmed all the charges. Another inquiry by Joint Commissioner (Traffic) Satish Mathur also found Pandey guilty of harassing a traffic constable.
The Sessions Court on Wednesday adjourned Deepak Pandey’s application for another day after the state sought more time to file its reply. Sessions Judge A.U. Chandial will now hear both sides on Thursday. Nidhi is to file an affidavit on Thursday, listing her reasons for opposing Pandey’s bail. Nidhi’s counsel told the court that Pandey had been tampering with evidence.
