A day after Jagat Singh submitted a letter to the Enforcement Directorate to buttress his claim that his visit to Iraq in 2001 was sanctioned by the Youth Congress, sources in the party have cast doubts about the genuineness of the document.

Sources disclosed that Haryana Transport Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala, the then Youth

Congress president, has written to Congress general secretary Ambika Soni, maintaining that he did not recall having given any such letter to Jagat. Soni was incharge of frontal organisations during this period.

Sources pointed out that the format of the letter defies norms. To start with, it bears no despatch number, which is elementary. There is no name, designation or the address of the addressee, either at the bottom or the top. The fonts used in the letter also vary. ‘‘Even the mention of sanctions is inadequate to conclude that the reference is to Iraq,’’ sources said.

‘‘I would not say anything till I see the original letter. I have made my stand clear from the outset. I did not sanction the visit,” Surjewala said.
