Leicester City were relegated from the English Premier League on Saturday after losing 1-0 at home to title-chasing Manchester United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored the only goal after 61 minutes as champions United went top of the table, a point clear of Arsenal who can replace them if they beat London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Highbury.

Bottom-of-the table Leicester, with only 22 points from 34 games, return to Division One after five seasons in the top flight. Saturday’s loss marked Leicester boss Dave Bassett’s 1,000th game as a manager and was also his last before being replaced by Micky Adams.

Already without injured trio David Beckham, Roy Keane and Juan Sebastian Veron, United manager Alex Ferguson rested Ryan Giggs, Fabien Barthez and Ruud van Nistelrooy due to Wednesday’s Champions League game.
