Stylish former India batsman Gundappa Viswanath does not agree with the idea of doing away with the toss in Ranji Trophy league matches as proposed recently at the BCCI conclave.
‘‘I read about it in the papers and I am not sure how it would work. You cannot take away everything in cricket,’’ wondered Viswanath.
The proposal to do away with toss has come from the technical committee of the BCCI headed by Sunil Gavaskar. Representatives of 27 BCCI units are to send in their views to BCCI’s working committee which meets in the third week of June. Viswanath suggested another way of negating home advantage in Ranji Trophy. ‘‘Perhaps you can get groundsmen from other states to prepare pitches so that fairness is assured,’’ he said.
An ICC Match Referee, Viswanath, also didn’t approve the two-tier domestic setup. ‘‘I prefer the zonal system. Putting the top teams in one group and the rest in other doesn’t help upcoming teams,’’ he said.
