ISLAMABAD, DEC 14: Leading Pakistani fast bowler Waqar Younis has lashed out at skipper Wasim Akram for his omission from the Australia-bound one-day squad and threatened to return to England to play county cricket only.

Younis, who with Akram once formed one of the deadliest bowling partnerships in the world, alleged he was meted out poor treatment by Akram during the recent Test series in Australia and his exclusion from the squad was unjustified. “My performance was never tested in the Test series against Australia but still my name was excluded from the Australia-bound squad without any reason,” media reports quoted Younis as telling newsmen in Lahore on Monday.

He squarely blamed the skipper for his exclusion from the Pakistani team for the triangular series in Australia, where India is the third team, and said, “Wasim Akram completely dominates the selection of the team which is not just. If Wasim has any grudge against me, the best place to settle that is inside a room and not on the ground,”the tearaway speedster added. He also accused Akram of under-bowling him during the Hobart Test in Australia saying, “the way he (Akram) treated me during the Hobart Test was one of the reasons for which Pakistan lost the match.

“I am being meted out this treatment for the last one and half years,” Younis said adding, “I am fully fit and can serve the country for atleast two more years. (but) If I am ignored consistently I will start playing county cricket in England.”

He justified his taking the battle to the media saying, “Wasim is a good skipper but his intentions are not clear, I do not want to indulge in controversy but due to the wrong behaviour of the PCB selectors and Wasim I have been forced to approach the media.”

Gen Zia to head PCB
ISLAMABAD: Lt Gen Taufeeq Zia, a corps commander, has been appointed the new chairman of PCB with immediate effect, replacing a senior bureaucrat in the agriculture ministry, Dr Zafar Altaf, who was given the charge barely a month and halfago, board officials said today. The PCB headquarters at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore has been sealed and is awaiting the arrival of its new chief, who is expected to take charge tomorrow. Gen Zia, who was an athlete of national level and a keen cricketer, has said he might review the decision to drop opening batsman Aamir Sohail from the Australia-bound team.
