A suicide car bomb exploded near a US marine base in western Iraq on Saturday, killing 16 Iraqi policemen and wounding up to 40. US Marine Lieutenant Lyle Gilbert said the blast occurred around 7 am at an Iraqi police post near Al Asad camp, near Baghdad, between the towns of Hit and Haditha. He said there were no US casualties.

About 10 people died at the scene and officials in Haditha said six died later.

Another suicide bomber blew up his vehicle near a checkpoint manned by Iraqi National Guards in Ishaqi, near Samarra, north of Baghdad, killing four guards. A guard officer said six guards were also wounded. In central Baghdad, insurgents fired two mortar rounds killing two civilians and wounding one, witnesses said.

US planes bombed targets in Falluja, killing two people, and US military said it had captured a lieutenant of Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi.

A US military statement said Zarqawi’s lieutenant had been captured with five other suspects in an early morning raid on what it said was a hideout of the Jordanian militant’s network in southern Falluja. It did not name the man or give his nationality.

An Iraqi militant group said it beheaded an Iraqi man which it suspected of collaborating with US forces and posted pictures of the killing on the Internet. The Army of Ansar Al-Sunna said in a statement posted on its website on Saturday it had captured the man in Mosul where he was working at a US base.
