It was Ram vs Krishna, a battle of epic proportions played out at the FICCI auditorium, more a venue for peaceful business talks than spiritual discourse. If BJP leader AB Vajpayee today referred to Ram when he said he would rather die than being shamed as he countered RSS chief K.S. Sudarshan’s shrill cry to step down, the latter took recourse to the Mahabharat as he played the role of Krishna, out to save the Indian society from being dishonoured.

An unrelenting Sudarshan continued his criticism of the BJP, though this time he was indirect and subtle. ‘‘Every civilisation goes through the natural cycle of rise and fall and we are currently in the grip of a decline,’’ he said, adding that big civilisations like Greece, Mesopotamia and the Romans had collapsed because they did not have the inner energy to propel them forward. ‘‘The Indian civilisation has survived because of spiritual strength.’’

‘‘In the Mahabharat, two men were responsible for the fall of the Kshatriyas and the Brahmins — Bhishma and Drona who did nothing when Draupadi was disrobed. Krishna then decided to put them on his hitlist. Their end was near as they stood against their own students/cousins. In their hearts, they knew that truth and dharma would be victorious,’’ said Sudarshan.

That the country was in the grip of another Mahabharat was his gentle reminder. He exhorted the audience to act, because even though he could predict victory, they had to keep the struggle going.

The RSS sarsanghchalak also focussed his ire on the new Pope, Benedict XVI, and American President Bush, and charged them with conspiring to convert India. Bush was admonished for setting aside a huge corpus for the purpose.

‘‘At the touch of a mouse, he knows who is to be converted,’’ Sudarshan said. Without quite asking them to relinquish their posts, the RSS leader, speaking at the second anniversary of television channel Sadhna, cautioned the audience to prepare for the ultimate test.

‘‘In 2111, the Hindu Rashtra will shine, once again,’’ Sudarshan said to thunderous applause, blaming the present plight on Macaulay’s descendants and the Marxists.

JAIPUR: RSS Chief K.S. Sudarshan, whose remarks on leadership in BJP created a furore in the party and the Sangh Parivar, sought to assure former Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee by lauding the performance of his government.

‘‘It (the NDA government headed by Vajpayee) was the first non-Congress government which successfully completed its term and shattered the myth that only Congress could provide a stable government,’’ he told reporters at a function in Viratnagar.

Sudarshan said it was also during Vajpayee’s prime ministership that the country conducted the Pokhran test and laid the roadmap for connecting villages with national highways, and the government should be judged by these achievements. — PTI
