MUMBAI, Oct 18: Rajendra Kadam (34), a sub-inspector attached to the Special Operations Squad of the Crime Branch shot his wife and mother-in-law in a fit of rage at his Pramukh Palace, Borivli, residence on Saturday night. On the eve of Diwali, Kadam's in-laws, Jaywant and Asha Chavan, had come to stay at his Borivli flat. On Saturday, Jaywant left for his Bhandup home, leaving his wife Asha and daughter Rashmi (Rajendra's wife) behind. When Rajendra returned from duty on Saturday evening, he sat down to dinner with his wife and mother-in-law. An argument erupted between Rajendra and his wife, and the brawl lasted well after dinner. They argued over Rashmi's frequent visits to her mother's house and the fact that their children were living their maternal grandparents at Bhandup. Rashmi's refusal to allow the children to stay at Borivli made Rajendra furious and at around 10.45 pm, in a fit of rage he drew his .32 service revolver and shot both at point-blank range. The bullets hit Rashmi in the temple, below the right ear and in the neck. Asha was shot in the head and chest. Later, Rajendra himself telephoned called the Borivli police and surrendered. An officer from the 1988 batch, Kadam had won a place in the coveted Special Operations Squad – ironically for his good track record. His colleagues say Rajendra was a ``reserved but genial chap''.Senior Inspector of the Borivli police station, R P Chhajlani, said: ``It was only the argument that led to the gruesome incident.'' Kadam has been remanded to police custody till October 30.
