Satnam Singh’s short love story was never meant to end like this. The class XII student of Guru Angad Dev High School in Ludhiana committed suicide after principal Sukhpal Singh beat him up for being friends with a primary teacher in the same school. The 17-year-old’s tragic death has left the entire city in a state of shock.

Satnam’s uncle Balbir Singh told The Indian Express that Sukhpal had seen the two exchanging letters. ‘‘He had fired the teacher on the same day but we were not aware of the incident till yesterday when Satnam returned from school with torn clothes. He was crying and said that was beaten up by the principal for not wearing the school uniform.’’

‘‘Sukhpal had threatened Satnam that he would complain to the police about his relationship with the teacher, the guilt probably drove Satnam to have poison,’’ Balbir said.

Angry residents from Satnam’s locality stormed the school building demanding the principal’s arrest.

Principal Sukhpal Singh, who went missing after the incident, was booked by the police for abetment to suicide. He surrendered before the police on Monday. He was brought to the court amid high police security. Despite being a holiday for Ram Navmi, a large number of people had gathered outside the court for the hearing. Sensing trouble, police took Sukhpal out from the back gate of the court. Sukhpal Singh has been sent to judicial custody till April 30.
