NEW DELHI, July 26: There was a deathly silence at the surgical observation room in RML Hospital where the bodies of the two bomb-blast victims lay. According to the relatives of Kashir Ahmed, he would still be alive but for the delay in treatment due to the strike at Hindu Rao Hospital.
Kashir Ahmed had been brought to the RML hospital in a state of deep shock and a CT scan revealed a large blood clot at the back of his head, apart from metal pieces which had lodged themselves in his brain. The RML doctors said that there was nothing they could do from him. “He died around 7.45 p.m. He was brought here in a critical state and even surgery couldn’t save him.”
But Ahmed’s relatives gathered outside the hospital had a different story to tell. One of them, Basheer Ahmed, said: “We first took him to Hindu Rao, but the doctors there said they couldn’t do anything for him because of the strike, and told us to take him to a private hospital. He could have been saved. On the way to the hospital he tried to talk and even asked for water. But they held us up at Hindu Rao for three precious, life-saving hours.”
The other victim, Rameshwari was brought to the hospital in an equally bad state. The RML doctors said she had a cardiac arrest on the way and died within 15 minutes of arrival. The bodies were taken to the Subzi Mandi mortuary tonight and a post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow.
