The row over women students being allowed to offer Friday prayers —juma — at the masjid attached to the Unity Women’s College at Manjeri is hotting up with the Samastha Kerala Sunni Yuvajana Sanghom (SKSYS) announcing a stir, blocking the college, on June 18 in protest against the practice.

The SYS, affiliated to the A.P. Sunni faction, has buried their differences with arch rivals and equally orthodox E.K. Sunni faction to oppose what both term as ‘anti-Islam’.

In a release issued here today, SYS Manjeri Zonal Committee said that Friday prayers by women were against Shariat laws. It said a section of teachers were trying to infuse Mujahid ideas into the minds of women students through Friday prayers. They said the college management, comprising religious and political leaders associated with the IUML, has been taking a lackadaisical approach on the issue.
