That’s what the numbers suggest for the World Cup quarterfinals, which opens Friday. All six former champions who qualified for the tournament have made the quarterfinals. The only former titleholder, Uruguay, failed to qualify

The Aggressors

Argentina, Brazil and Germany lead all teams at the tournament with 10 goals, twice as many as England and Ukraine. France, Italy and Portugal each have six goals.

The Germans have been the prolific in shots (78) and shots on target (38). But Argentina has been most deadly, scoring its 10 goals from just 21 shots on target. In comparison, Brazil’s 10 goals came on 36 shots on target.

Only Sweden, with 126, sent in more crosses than Germany (111) or England (104). Argentina (66) and Brazil (67) delivered the fewest crosses among the eight quarterfinalists.

Scoring pattern

Eighteen goals have been scored in the first 10 minutes of games, compared to 34 in the last 10 minutes. The first half has produced 67 goals, compared to 64 in the second half, with one in extra time.

Three goals came in first-half injury time and eight in time added on after the second half.

Substitutes have scored 21 of the 132 goals in the 56 matches to date. Teams have converted 11 of 15 penalties and there have been three own goals.
