SRINAGAR: A head constable of the Jammu and Kashmir police was among two people killed as militants targeted a police post and a security patrol in the Valley. Besides, nine persons, including two CRPF personnel, were wounded when a powerful explosion rocked downtown Srinagar on Friday. Official sources said militants struck in the Safakadal area of interior Srinagar when they lobbed a powerful grenade aimed at a security vehicle. The grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the road, causing injuries to nine persons, the sources said.

38 accounts frozen by I-T department

MUMBAI: The total number of bank accounts of stock brokers frozen by the Income Tax department rose to 38 following the raids on the premises of the stock broking firm Jamnadas Morarjee on Thursday. The I-T department is investigating concealment of income out of hawala operations of the stock market since the raids started last month. Among the accounts frozen on Friday were those of Sanjay Bakshi, Shripal Jain, Madhukar Sheth, Ajay Bakharia and Anil Hurkat, besides Pragati Securities, a stock broking firm.

Agro farm MD kidnapped in Assam

GUWAHATI: Suspected Bodo militants kidnapped R C Ghosh, Managing Director of an agricultural farm under the Central Government, from Lower Assam on Friday, official sources said. Ghosh, MD of Kokilabari Agriculture Farm, was kidnapped at gunpoint near Rangapani village under Patacharkuchi police station of Barpeta district.

Surrendered ULFA militant shot dead

TEZPUR: A surrendered ULFA militant, Bolin Kalita alias Baba was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Thursday night. Official sources said the gunmen, suspected to be ULFA militants, entered his house and shot him dead from point blank range at Chaibari village under Jamuguri police station. Kalita was picked up by the police and para-military forces and interrogated about his former colleagues last Monday.

Four CRB employees remanded

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday issued notices to the CBI on the bail plea of two top executives of the Turkish firm Karsan Limited, currently in judicial custody in Tihar Jail. Justice Dalveer Bhandari issued notices to the CBI following a petition filed by their counsel, S K Sharma. Karsan’s Chairman and Managing Director Tuncay Alunkus, and vice-president Cihan Karanci were extradited from Sweden to India for their alleged role in the Rs 133 crore urea import scam on October 3 and have been kept under judicial custody since October 14.

Delhi CM’s nephew in police custody

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Friday remanded Pawan — one of the two nephews of Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma — accused in the murder of a property dealer here, to two days police custody. He was produced before metropolitan magistrate S Kumar. Pawan (25) and Neeraj (27), both sons of Verma’s elder brother Rajender Singh, had allegedly shot 23-year-old Devender alias Kala, a property dealer, at point-blank range at Mundka village in West Delhi last Sunday. Police said the duo allegedly had a long-standing dispute with Kala over a plot of land at Nangloi and decided to settle scores with him. Efforts are on to nab the other accused, Neeraj, police said.
