
THRISSUR: Six persons, including a three-and-half-year-old boy, were killed and another was injured when fire broke out in a fireworks manufacturing unit in nearby Chiyyaram, triggering an explosion, on Sunday afternoon. The deceased were Ukran Paul (45), the owner of the fireworks unit, his son Sarath (3-1/2), two workers, Sundaran (29) and Mahesh (24), besides two women, Ammini (58) and Kunji alias Mani (25), police said.
The fire was caused accidentally, police said, adding that it triggered an explosion when Paul was about to enter the work place. Bandhs at Serampore and Jamboni

Bandhs were observed at Serampore in Hooghly and at Jamboni in Midnapore districts on Sunday at the instance of the CITU and CPI(M), respectively. The bandh was in protest against killings of party activists in the past 48 hours. The police were yet to trace the killer of Mohan Dutta, a CITU leader of Indian Jute Mill, who was shot dead near the mill gate on Saturday. AGARTALA: In the first major incident of violence by tribal ultras in daylight since the imposition of disturbed areas two and half months ago, one person was killed and three passengers of a jeep were abducted in an ambush in Khowai sub-division of West Tripura on Sunday. In the stepped up patrolling, that followed the incident, nine suspected militants were nabbed by paramilitary forces from 35 mile point on the Assam-Agartala on Friday, police sources said. The ultras have demanded heavy ransom for their release, the sources said.
One killed, two injured in dacoities
BANGALORE: One person was beaten to death and two others were injured in two separate incidents of dacoities in Karnataka since Saturday night. An armed gang of dacoits forced their way into a house near Challakere, 30 km from Chitradurga, in the early hours on Sunday, fatally assaulted a person, injured another and decamped with valuables worth Rs 5,000, police said.In another incident, a six-member gang of dacoits broke into a farm house near Bijapur on Saturday night, attacked a person and looted the valuables, police said.
Six underground activists held
IMPHAL: At least six underground activists, including four women, were apprehended by security forces from different places of Manipur on Saturday. Official sources said three women activists of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and one of the Kanglei Yawol Kana Lup (KYKL) were arrested by police and 30th Assam Rifles personnel from different places in Bishenpur and Imphal districts. In another incident, two KYKL activists were arrested by the 30th Assam Rifles personnel from Mongsangei area and Singjamei area, both under Singjamei police station in Imphal district.
