VADODARA, April 21: Newly appointed chairman of the Gujarat Electricity Board G Subbarao, who held a meeting with senior officials in Vadodara on Sunday, has stated the State was in a comfortable position on the power front this summer compared to the previous two years and that the Board was attempting to maintain the supply position during peak hours.
He said by April 17 this year, 2,268 million units were supplied to consumers; the figure was expected to reach 4,000 million units by the end of the month. The figures for the corresponding period in 1996 and 1997 were 3314 million and 3319 million units respectively.
Though the early and harsh summer this year has led to a sharp rise in the demand for power, particularly in the peak hours, the GEB was putting in all possible efforts to maintain supply, he said.
Substantiating his claim, the GEB chairman stated this year that till April 17, it had not possible to meet the maximum demand of 6183 MW, against 5216 MW in 1996 and 5077 MW in 1997 during the corresponding period. He said though the heat had intensely affected the process of power generation during peak hours, power supply had been maintained, except for minor hiccups. He claimed that the GEB had been able to maintain an average 15 hours supply to the agricultural sector whereas it could give power to farmers only for 12 hours a day in 1996 and 10 hours a day in 1997.
