PUNE, MAY 26: Quality is the new buzz word for the roads makers in Maharashtra currently being credited for constructing the nation’s first Expressway.
The State Public Works Department now is vying for the prestigious ISO 9000 quality certification. Two of the three PWD circles selected for the pilot project have already won the ISO 9000 certificates while the Mumbai Construction Circle is now ‘very close to the certificate’, State PWD secretary A B Pawar told reporters on Thursday.
Governor of Maharashtra Dr P C Alexander will present the prestigious quality certifications to the officials of the Vigilance and Quality Control Circle and the Designs Circle in Navi Mumbai in the inaugural session of the two-day Indian Road Congress’ 159th Council Meeting beginning on Friday.
The PWD aims at achieving customer satisfaction, Pawar said adding that the department would henceforth be focused on the customer.
The quality system based on the ISO 9000 standard would mould the PWD as a truly dynamic department. This is a humble beginning, the secretary adds.
In the immediate future, the vigilance and quality control circles in other parts of the State and all the National Highway divisions would aim for the certification, Pawar said adding that the exercise would mean involvement of the contractors, designers and also the departmental staff in ensuring quality, he added.
