AHMEDABAD, Feb 28: To improve the quality of education and also curb the number of dropouts in schools, the State government will soon launch a quality improvement programme in about 1,000 primary schools in rural areas.

Education officials said the dropout rate in rural areas was nearly 70 per cent. The rate between Class I and VII was about 60 per cent, figures indicate. Officials said that about 45 per cent students leave studies because of economic and social reasons and about 45 per cent students leave because they loose interest for various reasons.

The education quality improvement scheme will be first started in the talukas having very low level of literacy. Officials said that black-boards would be distributed in these villages. Along with study, play ground facilities will also be developed in the rural schools. Officials added the government has planed to train the teachers and would organise seminars, convention and even classes to improve the teaching skills.

While the State education department is gearing up for quality improvement in education, the human resource development department is preparing a book on modern science to be introduced in selected 20 primary schools from the coming academic session. Students in those schools will be allowed to answer their examination papers on these specially designed books. If the experiment succeeds, the HRD department will take it up on a larger scale.
