The Talao Bachao Kruti Samiti, an organisation of fishermen’s co-operatives,has lauded the decision of the state government to reinstate fishing rightsat irrigation reservoirs below 200 hectares area to the fishermen’sco-operatives.
The reservoirs will be offered to the co-operatives on contract basis. Thestate government has also scrapped the controversial GRs of 1995, 1997 and1999, through which the previous government had decided to privatise fishingat irrigation reservoirs.
The Kruti Samiti was agitating since long to get these GRs scrapped torestore fishing rights in small reservoirs. The state government has alsodecided to follow complete procedure to give the reservoir on contract basisas per the GR of 1966.
It may be mentioned that The Indian Express had published a series ofreports regarding the discrepancies in the recent GRs and plight offishermen in the state between January 18 and 20 last.
A meeting of the Kruti Samiti was held on Friday expressing gratitude toVilasrao Deshmukh, Chief Minister, Anandrao Deokate, Minister for Fisheries,Dr Padamsinh Patil, Minister for Irrigation, Datta Meghe, Minister for CivilSupplies and Sulekha Kumbhare and Anees Ahmed, Ministers of State, for thedecision.
