MUMBAI, MAY 25: Alarmed by the large-scale pollution of rivers due to the discharge of effluents, the Congress-led Democratic Front Government today approved a stringent policy to regulate erring industries.
“We have drafted a comprehensive policy to ensure that rivers are not polluted owing to discharge of effluents. We have created three zones A-1, A-2 and A-3 for each of the 20 rivers in the state to control rampant pollution,” Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said.
Talking to media persons after the weekly Cabinet meeting, Deshmukh said that henceforth, permission would not be given for new units to come up within three kilometres from the bank of a river, especially between the area from the origin of the river and the starting point of a dam on the river, he said.
In the next three to eight kms, only non-polluting industries would be permitted, while in the third zone, any industry, but with the prior consent of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, would be permitted, Deshmukh added.
Deshmukh said the Cabinet had also decided to give grants of Rs 25 lakh each to municipal corporations in the tribal areas of the State to provide them with basic amenities.
The Chief Minister said his Government had decided to give grants of Rs five lakh each to libraries completing 100 years in the State, so that the rich heritage of literature would be preserved for generations to come.
