Thousands accompanied singer Ishmeet Singh’s body on its final journey on Thursday, as his last rites were performed with full State honours at about 4 pm here. Earlier in the day, post-mortem reports confirmed that the Star Voice of India-2007 winner had died of drowning.

Ishmeet was reported to have drowned in the swimming pool of a beach resort in Male, capital of Maldives, on Tuesday. His body was brought to Ludhiana on Wednesday night.

The body was brought home today after the post-mortem was conducted at the local civil hospital. It was later placed on a raised platform outside for about three hours to allow the public to get a last glimpse.

The post-mortem was conducted at the local Civil Hospital after Ishmeet’s family alleged foul play in his death and demanded a probe. Meanwhile, Ishmeet’s viscera has been sent to laboratories at Kharar and Patiala’s Rajindra Medical College for investigations, said the SMO.

Commenting on reports of an injury on Ishmeet’s head, the SMO said it was a minor abrasion which could have been caused when he must have hit the floor of the pool. “But, this abrasion cannot be blamed for Ishmeet’s death.”

The state government announced that a memorial and an award in the field of singing would be instituted in Ishmeet’s memory.
