The Argentina-Nigeria match was definitely the best match of the day. Both teams attacked from the word go and though Nigeria had their moments of glory, it was Argentinean skills that carried the day.
It was the silken touch of Juan Veron in the middle which helped Argentina edge out the Super Eagles. In fact, it was the combination of Veron and Batistuta which gave Argentina the lead in Group F, with Batigol heading in a beautiful corner-kick taken by Veron.
Playing as a captain due to the absence of Roberto Ayala, the Manchester United medio had a superb game and was largely responsible for upsetting the rhythm of the Nigerians. Though he created many openings Argentina was unlucky not to score more than a goal. Veron, also known as ‘Brujita’ (which means little witch) followed on his father’s footsteps and began his career with the Argentinean club Estudiantes. A subsequent stint with Boca Juniors left him hungry for more and he decided to try his luck in Europe at 21. He soon became a name to be reckoned with and after playing for Sampdoria and Parma he joined Lazio in 1999 for a whopping $ 20 million fee. It was money well spent for Veron as he helped the club to win four trophies.
