It was expected to be a ‘warm-up’ match. Instead, the Indians who travelled to Thailand for two preparatory games ahead of the Afro-Asian Games, prefered to field a junior side.
Their opponents — an Under-23 Olympic side, saw Indian coach Stephan Constantine take a last-minute decision to rest his senior players. The match, dominated by India according to assistant coach Aloke Mukherjee, eventually ended goalless.
The Indian side that played was devoid of Indian superstar Bhaichung Bhutia, who was fresh from a professional stint with Malaysian club Perak FA and fellow striker IM Vijayan, defender Mahesh Gowali and goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee, leave aside Jo Paul Ancheri who was ‘officially’ rested as he was nursing a hamsting injury.
India now play the Thai national team on October 17.
