A day after news-weekly Tehelka exposed an audio CD of R.B. Sreekumar being tutored before his deposition before the riots commission, the senior IPS officer has said he is willing to appear before the commission again. He has also said he will submit to the commission his semi-official diary.
If Sreekumar’s affidavits and deposition before the commission have embarrassed the government, the diary notings, posted on the weekly’s website, are even more damning:
• In June 2002, Sreekumar notes that P.K. Mishra, principal secretary in the chief minister’s office, has asked him to track down a cellphone number, which turns out to be that of Haren Pandya.
• Chief Minister Narendra Modi asks him to tap the phone numbers of Shankersinh Vaghela, now Union Textiles Minister.
• Colleagues press him to present the picture that all’s well on the law and order front when then chief election commissioner J.M. Lyngdoh came to assess conditions in the state before announcing Assembly election dates.
Sreekumar maintains that he did not record the conversation between himself and an IAS officer and counsel who briefed him before his deposition. Nor did he give his diary to anybody. But he affirms that the transcript of the CD match the conversation he had with the officers and that the extracts from his dairy are correct. ‘‘I’ve been maintaining a semi-official diary from the time I was posted in the Intelligence Bureau. It contains detailed accounts of the instructions issued to the Intelligence Bureau and of meetings in which government officials were asked to present a picture of normalcy in the state before the Election Commission,’’ he said.
He said he had supporting evidence to substantiate the documents, which he will present before the riots commission. ‘‘I’m not battling for promotion. I will not hesitate to salute a junior,’’ said the officer who was recently passed over for promotion. ‘‘All I want to do is restore the sanctity of criminal procedure.’’
Advocate Mukul Sinha, who is appearing before the commission on behalf of voluntary group Jan Sangharsh Manch, said, ‘‘It’s shocking to see that the government is tutoring witnesses. I will move for summoning Sreekumar again before the commission with his diary. I will also be summoning three other police officers who have deposed earlier.’’
Sinha said he would also request the commission to summon former president K.R. Narayanan, who recently alleged that former PM A.B. Vajpayee had not taken prompt action to curb communal riots in Gujarat despite his many letters.
