Corporates tend to run into spirituality when they are tired of ‘hiring and firing’, but spirituality should not be pursued just for stress management but for the complete organisational sustenance, said Art of Living proponent and founder Sri Sri Ravishankar.

Delivering the keynote at the three-day symposium on ‘Corporate Culture and Spirituality’ organised by Art of Living Foundation, Sri Sri Ravishankar said, ‘‘The stress from hiring employees and the depression from firing them are the two reasons for corporates to be inclined to spirituality.’’ The ability to sustain and endure life and its challenges is key for the success of any corporate leader, he added.

Trust is one common factor between spirituality and corporate world. Without trust corporates cannot function and trust is inculcated by spirituality, he said. Motivation is a key word in organisations today and it is followed by incentives to get the results. There should be shift in corporate organisations from motivation which is shortlived to inspiration, which is selfless and more spiritual, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Indian Oil Corporation chairman M. S. Ramachandran said, the relationship between coporate culture and spirituality is most appropriate in todays coprorate world which is striving to be globally competitive under harsh situations. ‘‘Spirituality helps in de-egoisation, to be transparent, open, to motivate employees, to make obejective decisions’’. Transformation in leadership was the need of the hour, for which a change of mindset is required which could be brought in with the help of spirituality, he added.

According to US-based Hazmed Inc CEO Jacqueline Sales ‘‘if I walk in spiritual path everything else would follow me’’. Spirituality should start from the corporate leader level and then take it across to the executives, she added. The time has come for spiritual and business leaders to come together for the creation of a better world, said Modicorp chairman B. K. Modi. India should aim to be the spiritual super power of the world, he said.

ICICI chairman Narayan Vaghul in his address said that Spirituality is a process of mind, it helps in the transformation from selfishness to selflessness. ‘‘Spirituality should lead to great activity in life and better wealth creation rather than withdrawal from the realities of life’’, he said.

According to Karnataka government large and medium industries minister R. V. Deshpande companies needed to devote more thought to ethics, values and social responsibility rather than being ‘just profit-oriented’.
