Soren wins trust vote, to focus on flood relief

Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren won the trust vote on Friday. In the 82-member House with one seat vacant, 76 votes were cast. While 42 MLAs voted in Soren’s favour, 34 MLAs voted against him.

After the trust vote, Soren’s first concern was to provide relief to the flood-ravaged Bihar. “In this hour of crisis, we must come forward in favour of our big brother Bihar,” he said. “Now, I should do my best to carry on with the business of Government.”

But the trouble of leading a coalition government is far from over. A group of at least six MLAs representing the Congress and the RJD moved to grab plum posts of chairman/vice-chairman of the state-run boards/PSUs. These MLAs, who could not be traced on Thursday night, surfaced on Friday and participated in the proceedings of the trust vote only after Soren is learnt to have promised them to ‘honour’ their demands. “In coalition Government, the pulls and pressures are inevitable,” said JMM secretary Madan Naik.
