Aided by an extra vote from one of the Opposition MLAs, NDA candidate and JD(U) leader Digvijay Singh today won the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Jharkhand.
Singh, who was expected to get the votes of 42 mlas of the nda, secured an extra vote from United Goan Democratic Party’s MLA Joba Manjhi. In the 81-member Assembly, he won 43 votes.
Singh’s victory was considered a setback to the JMM, which lost its representation in the Rajya Sabha. JMM’s Durga Soren got 17 votes and RJD’s Mukti Nath Upadhyaya got 18 votes.
The two-member United Goan Democratic Party (UGDP) suffered a split as MLA Joba Manjhi voted in favour of Singh. Also, JD(U)’s six, BJP’s 30 and six Independent MLAs, who were allies of the ruling NDA in Jharkhand, voted for Digvijay Singh.
The opposition UPA disintegrated with the JMM’s 17 MLAs voting en block for Durga and the RJD (7), Congress (9) and Independent(2), including UGDP’s Bandhu Tirkey and Independent Stephen Marandi, voting in favour of Upadhayaya.
Apart from the poll pact reached between the ruling NDA comprising BJP, JD(U) and the six Independents and backing of the UGDP’s Manjhi, the other factor behind Singh’s success is believed to be Upadhayaya and RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav who managed to slice away the almost the entire chunk of UPA votes, excluding those of the Left and the JMM.
